I recently spoke to a group of Pastors about creative and powerful communication. I was trying not to be overly spiritual but I was struck by something. The best sermons or talks I have ever heard had an overtly personal edge to them. The speaker knew things that only God could have known. I truly question wether or not we are making any difference in communication unless the message penetrates the privacy of a persons life. This can only come by a work of the Holy Spirit in both the speaker and the listiner.
I believe that this type of pin pointed speaking has a true prophetic edge. A lack of the prophetic always contains a lack of the specific. Many speak in generalities because they have nothing to say that has been birthed from God. We must avoid becoming generalized which leads to being trivialized. A sensitivity to the creativity of the Holy Spirit can keep us from this trap.
